MCKENNA’S FORT, THE NEW THEATRE
As Irish celebrations for the heroes of 1916 get knocked into twelfth gear, it’s easy to forget a few of the cast of characters who made the Rising such a massive moment in the battle for independence. Despite being seminal to 1916, Roger Casement is often overlooked for his role in the Rising – because he didn’t actually get a chance to participate in it.
“He was arrested on Good Friday, 1916, on the way to warn the Rebels that the assistance he had obtained from Germany was insufficient to make the Rising a success,” says Arnold Thomas Fanning, writer of new play McKenna’s Fort.
